A comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there
Easy street is a popular and favourite street where people like to live. They love easy street because it’s easy. Not sure I’ve met anyone that likes to make things difficult all the time. Many have lived on easy street all their lives. The thought of moving to an unfamiliar street is very frightening and crippling.
I remember a colleague I worked with few years ago. She was over fifty years old at the time and still living with her mother in the same house where she was born. She had never lived anywhere else. I appreciate that not everyone likes change – why change or fix it when it’s not broken? But the truth is, some things will remain unbroken at the surface because that’s what comfort zones are made for; to settle with the familiar without rocking the boat. This line from drama series, Grey’s Anatomy captures my thought:
Why do we even try when the barriers are so high and the odds are so low? Why don’t we just park it in and go home. It would be so so much easier. It’s because, in the end there is no glory in easy. No one remembers easy. They remember the blood and the bones and long, agonising fight to the top. And that’s how you become legendary
Comfort in this context can apply to relationships, work, personal growth and finances. I am not advocating for you to quit or abandon what you are doing currently, rather it may just need some tweaking and re-shuffling.
When will you know a re-shuffling is needed? When you start to take things for granted and you are loosing your sharpness and drive. Every year, athletes compete in their various sports and they aim to outdo their last attempts or break a record. Companies are always pushing their innovations and products to be better and to sell more.
